Other horse care
We have so far looked at the main caring that is needed for horses, there are of course a number of other elements of care that your horse will require, or you will find that these will vary from horse to horse, however having the knowledge of these other elements is extremely important. One of these issues that is important is the correct parasite management for them. This is something that is a life time treatment for horse and is needed to be done periodically throughout their life in order to prevent any problems.
There are a number of just every day steps that you can carry out that will reduce the chances of your horse suffering from having parasites, these include cleaning out your horses stable of any droppings. As well as this you can also break up droppings in the fields that your horse lives in, if you have the land to be able to move your horse about so that a field is left unlived in for a few weeks every now and again is also a good thing. You are also able to get a number of fly sprays that is also useful to spray on them as it will reduce the changes of them attracting insects. As well as this you are able to get what are known as bot egg knifes' that are used to remove any eggs that might have been laid within the coat of a horse. However this treatment will not help you when it comes to getting rid of any internal parasites. Instead it is found that the best way of getting rid of or treating internal parasites is to give horses anthelmintic drugs these are commonly referred to as wormers.
There are a few ways of how to go about worming, however there are generally 2 ways which are the most common ways to worm that are used the most. The first of these processes is known as daily wormers, as fairly obvious with their name they are a treatment that is given to a horse every day. They are given to the horse through small doses that is put in the horses food, this then working through the body of the horse by killing the parasites as they infect the horse. This is seen as a mild dose for a horse to take in and therefore is favoured by a lot of owners as it is a means of worming them which is easy for a horse. However due to it being a softer method it can sometimes mean that it isn't the best way of removing all the parasites.
The second common way of worming a horse is known as purge wormers, this is a much stronger way of killing parasites. This is done through using a single dose that is given to the horse for a period of 8 to 12 weeks. The course of which the dose is given to the horse all varies on the conditions of the horse.
