Horse information
Making sure your horses are safe is one of the most important factors to take into account, because not only is for your benefit but it also important for the horse itself. Horses love to be in a large open space and this is something that is really important for them to be able to move about freely, as well as this it gives them the exercise that they need to stay healthy.
Therefore it is important that this large space is safe for the horses to move about as they wish, therefore fencing is often required to keep them safe. In some countries you might have seen the use of barbed wire around a filed in which horses are kept, however this really is not something which would be advised in England as it is extremely dangerous. If a horse managed to get caught up in the barbed wire it could cause some serious damage to them resulting in long term injuries or scaring on them. It is therefore advised to use wire that is known as smooth wire' this is much safer for the horses to be around, and if you are wanting to ensure their safety even more than you can back it up by using electric wire fencing. When fencing of an area the best possible way to do this is to use either 4 or 5 strands across the whole area, this is to ensure the most security for your animals. You still need to be careful with using wire with horses as smooth wire can still be dangerous to a horse if they become tangled in with it, so making sure that it is on correctly is very important. As well as this it is important that the up keep of the fencing is kept well, this means regular checks on the whole area of the fencing, as well as making sure it is tidy it is also advised to keep the wire tight too. You should also ensure that the wire is obvious this is for the horses purposes, for example if you get a new horse or you alter the fencing the wire needs to be visible for your horse to see, so that when they are moving about they will know where they need to stop to prevent them from getting injured.
When it comes to food it is very important that you maintain the up kept of your horse and that they have a well balanced and healthy diet at all times. On average it is estimated that a horse needs to eat between 1.5 to 2.5% of their body weight in food each day, this is something that will obviously vary between horses as a number of factors are needed to take into account such as their age and their daily living. In general horses diet consists of eating food like hay, grass, grain and pelleted feeds. You will find if you have a number of horses that some are likely to put more weight on than others, so you will have to make a few slight alterations to their diet.
